Der Titel - ein Widerspruch in sich -, hört man doch immerzu von „wichtigen, großen Sammlungen“, die schwerreichen Leuten gehören, die dadurch berühmt werden und immer bedeutender. Auch liest man selten, dass das Kunstsammeln die BesitzerInnen zu Armen gemacht hätte: viel eher erfreuen sie sich ihrer Schätze und frönen der Sammelleidenschaft.

Demnach gibt es keine „Arme Sammler“, aber es gibt sie doch und so zeigten Peter Funken und Andreas A. Koch seit 2016 ihre als „Armensammlungen“ bezeichneten Kollektionen in einer Wanderausstellung an fünf Orten: Zuerst in Bremen (Kubo), dann im „Weltecho“, Chemnitz, der „Kunsthalle Kühlungsborn“, dem „Kunstverein Ruhr“ in Essen und schließlich im Sommer 2018 im „Atelierhof Kreuzberg“ in Berlin. Und nun noch einmal in der Galerie Vincenz Sala und zusammen mit der Sammlerin Ulla Hahn, die die Initialzündung für die Neuauflage von „Arme Sammler“ gab. Sie sprach Funken/Koch an und ist diesmal mit von der Partie, denn sie zeigt Arbeiten aus ihrer Sammlung belgischer Kunst. Waren Arme-Sammler-Ausstellungen bisher ein Mix von Bildern, Grafiken, Objekten und Fotos, die Funken/Koch so präsentierten, wie es „am besten“ aussah, so ist es diesmal bei Vincenz Sala etwas anders, denn die Sammler/in teilen die drei Wände der Galerie auf, so dass nun fein getrennt und doch in Nachbarschaft zu sehen ist Kunst aus Belgien (Slg. Hahn) zusammen mit Kunst von Frauen mit Frauen (Slg. Funken) und einem Präsentationskonzept, das große und kleine Arbeiten aus der Sammlung Koch vorstellt.

Die drei meinen es ernst, ihre Sammlungen entstanden durch Ankäufe, doch vor allem aufgrund von Tauschen und Schenken, so dass alle Arbeiten, die gezeigt werden, mit Geschichten und Erlebnissen verbunden sind, also von Zuneigung und Freundschaft, Erinnerung und Freude berichten können. Darin liegt dann vermutlich der wirkliche Wert dieser Armensammlungen, aber sehen Sie selbst ...

The title - a contradiction in terms - as we constantly hear about "important, large collections" that belong to wealthy people who become famous and increasingly important as a result. It is also rare to read that collecting art has turned the owners into poor people: they are much more likely to enjoy their treasures and indulge their passion for collecting.

Accordingly, there are no "poor collectors", but they do exist and so Peter Funken and Andreas A. Koch have been showing their collections, known as "poor collections", in a travelling exhibition at five locations since 2016: first in Bremen (Kubo), then at the "Weltecho" in Chemnitz, the "Kunsthalle Kühlungsborn", the "Kunstverein Ruhr" in Essen and finally in summer 2018 at the "Atelierhof Kreuzberg" in Berlin. And now once again at the Vincenz Sala Gallery and together with the collector Ulla Hahn, who provided the initial spark for the new edition of "Poor Collectors". She approached Funken/Koch and is taking part this time, as she is showing works from her collection of Belgian art. While previous Poor Collectors exhibitions were a mix of paintings, graphics, objects and photos presented by Funken/Koch in the way that looked "best", this time it is a little different at Vincenz Sala, as the collectors are dividing up the three walls of the gallery so that art from Belgium (Hahn Collection) can be seen together with art by women with women (Funken Collection) and a presentation concept that presents large and small works from the Koch Collection.

The three are serious; their collections were created through acquisitions, but above all through exchanges and gifts, so that all the works on display are linked to stories and experiences, i.e. they can tell of affection and friendship, memories and joy. This is probably where the real value of these collections lies, but see for yourself ...
